Working Three Jobs Just to Stay in Debt

This is something I’ve never fully understood. Whenever there’s some Republican event, it seems that everyone wants to talk about how hard they had it growing up, until the whole thing starts to sound like this:

Well, actually, that’s not entirely true. Since many of these speakers were born with silver spoons in their mouths, and diamond-studded silver spoons at that, it’s more often about how their parents or grandparents had it hard. So what are they trying to get across by saying this? Just that they came from a hard-working, salt-of-the-earth family that didn’t need government assistance to get ahead (except when they did, but let’s not mention that)? Because when I hear a story like that, my reaction is that nobody should have to go through that kind of thing just to make ends meet. That’s apparently not how the Republicans feel, however, since they’re still in favor of deregulation and other top-down economic policies, not to mention opposed to labor unions. People who were able to work hard and get ahead are worthy of praise, but we have to remember that they’re the exception rather than the rule. Plenty of hard-working people never catch a break, and have to keep working long hours for little pay.

I went through periods of up to nine months where I was willing to work, was qualified for the job I was seeking, and even during a good economy was unable to find work. I also slogged through a lot of minimum wage or near minimum wage jobs that were stultifyingly boring. The job market is a bear!!
