The Tree Fairies

One particular variety of Irish fairies are the Lesidhe, guardians of the forest. As such, I suppose they’re sort of like the Dryads of Greek mythology, but much more dangerous. One of their favorite tricks is to imitate mockingbirds to get people lost in the woods. They are not, however, known to directly harm humans. Their dislike for mankind might be due to human disregard for trees and forests, and they’re much more vengeful in their role as tree guardians than the Lorax ever was. Most of the time, the Lesidhe just look like trees, but you can sometimes see them moving around, which is a dead giveaway. While sometimes found in groups, they are usually solitary. Lesidhe prefer to sleep during the daytime, and are thought to hibernate during the winter. I can’t find much information on them beyond this, but I suppose this is enough. Just be wary if you see any of them in an Irish forest.

Is this truly an old legend, or a back-formation from the Russian Leshy? I cannot find mention of these in any fairly complete scholarship on the subject, such as the work of Katherine Briggs.
