Mayhem in the Mythosphere

The Game, by Diana Wynne Jones – Another story from Jones dealing with mythology, this time focusing largely on the Greco-Roman, but bringing in other cultures as well. A girl named Hayley learns from her grandfather about the mythosphere, a magical place where the various mythical beings of the world live. When her grandmother sends her away, she finds out that her cousins are not only aware of the mythosophere, but frequently play games that involve bringing back objects from there. Baba Yaga makes an appearance, and even stories like “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland come into play. The Game is also a story where pretty much everyone has an alternate mythical identity, which is generally fun. It was short and I thought it ended rather abruptly, but it’s definitely worth a read.
